Almanların ünlü bira festivali Oktoberfest ya da Türkçe çevirisi ile Ekim Festivali’nin tarihi oldukça eskiye dayanıyor. İlk olarak Almanya’nın Bavyera eyaletinin Münih kentinde, 1810 yılında, Bayern Kralı 1. Ludvig ile Prenses Teresa’nın düğününde büyük eğlenceler patlak verdi. Almanlar bunu fırsat bilip sürekli kutlamaya devam ettiler.

Oktoberfest, her yıl eylül ayının son günleri ve ekim ayının ilk günlerinde düzenleniyor ve iki hafta sürüyor. Almanya’nın birleşmesinden sonra festivalin programı da değiştirildi. Eğer ekim ayının ilk pazarı ayın 1'ine ya da 2'sine denk geliyorsa, festivalin süresi ayın 3'üne, yani Almanya Birleşme Günü kutlamalarına kadar uzatılıyor.

Her yıl yaklaşık 6 milyon kişinin katıldığı bu festival, Münih şehrindeki en ünlü olay. Festival, genellikle Almanlar tarafından kısaca "d’ Wiesn" ya da "d'Waasn" olarak söylenen Theresienwiese (Teresa Alanı) isimli yerde yapılıyor. Festivalin en önemli özelliği bira. Kutlama her sene Münih Belediye Başkanının büyük bir ahşap bira fıçısına çeşme çakması töreni ile başlıyor. Almanlar bu eylemi "O'zapft is!" (Bavyeraca: Çeşmelendi!) biçiminde seslendiriyorlar.

Kutlamalar için özel olarak bir Oktoberfest birası mayalanıyor ki bu bira hem tat hem de alkol bakımından daha koyu renkli ve sert. Bira Maß denen bir litrelik özel bardaklarda sunuluyor ve ilk mass, Bavyera Başkanına ikram ediliyor. Sadece Münihli bira üreticilerinin bu özel birayı sunmalarına izin veriliyor ve bu sunum, adı Bierzelt olan binlerce kişinin sığabileceği devasa çadırlarda yapılıyor.

One of the most popular current events that started a few days ago and attracted already millions of visitors: Oktoberfest! Starting on 18th September this year, it will go on until 4th October. Who wants to spend colorful days in the fabulous atmosphere of this famous Bavarian beer festival in the enchanting city Munich? You still have time! Wanna check what kind of a festival exactly Oktoberfest is? Read below before start packing!

The area where this festival is celebrated is called shortly “Wies’n”. Why? To answer that, let’s go back in time 200 hundred years! Event: A royal wedding in 1810. Date: 12 October. Place: Fields in front of the city gates. Crown Prince Ludwig, (later King Ludwig I) is married to Princess Therese (of Saxony-Hildburghausen). Celebrations take place on these fields, that’s why the place is named as “Theresienwiese” (Theresa’s fields). Now, it’s”Wies’n” for the locals. At the time the end of this royal wedding was marked by horse races that are presented as a festival celebration for the whole Bavaria. The tradition of Oktoberfest started with the intention of repeating horse races in the subsequent year. In time, new events, attractions have been added to the festival program; once the most popular and the oldest event of this festival, horse races are no longer held. But this year, being the 200th year of the festival, this old tradition will be revived!

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind about Oktoberfest is beer! But, the festival as a whole includes many other attractions as well! The festival begins with the tapping of the first beer barrel and then beer tents start selling beers. The huge funfair is itself an entertainment zone in the festival area. What’s more? “Open-air Oktoberfest Music” will be held on Sunday, 26th September 2010 (if rainy weather greets the festival people, it’ll be held on Sunday, 3rd October 2010) The festival area will be more than marvellous with those open-air concerts by the bands of Oktoberfest –up to 400 musicians-. The place will be the steps of “Bavaria Statue” that watchs the festival from above.
